So later today I am possibly finally buying the 2006 Land Cruiser with 260k miles that I’ve been looking at, I told the seller my only big hesitation was that the timing belt hadn’t been done in the last 90k miles (recommended schedule) and he went and got the timing chain, water pump and serpentine drive belt replaced a couple of days ago at the Toyota dealership. Anything else I should look out for? I’ve already checked out the undercarriage for rust and other than a little surface rust it looks pretty good. CarFax looks pretty good as well, fair bit of good service history.
Thanks!

If you have a private party seller who is willing to take his soon to be sold 12 year old vehicle
to the dealer
to have a timing belt and water pump replaced at 260k miles, congratulations, you’ve bought the right car from the right guy.
Enjoy.

I agree, he has also been pretty accommodating. I just want to know if there are any other possible issues to look out for.

I know nothing about Land Cruisers, but I’d just like to point out that Kinja is really stretching the definition of recent with the Vehicross post:

I don’t see anything recent in the CarFax, but I plan on changing a lot of the fluids myself soon anyway. I’ll ask the owner, he seems pretty honest, and actually cares about his other vehicles.

Yeah that’s old
, but
to be fair, it is my 3rd most recent post

There’s shitloads of minor stuff but it’s nothing you can really do much about but deal with when the time comes. Honestly, if it has been looked after till now then it’s a good score. But like Pip Bip says...diffs and driveline grease.

Yeah, I would definitely buy a car from this guy.

260k is a lot of miles either way. Im not saying you wont have a great reliable vehicle...im just saying that you will be surprised at what you will have to replace next. Could be trim, could be wheel bearings...who knows!
my main concerns with that mileage would be:
Wheel bearings - when were they last serviced?
Transmissions service (its “lifetime” but that actually means 150k service intervals under good conditions)
Starter motor (its under the intake plenum and if it goes its a PITA to get at)
A ir injection system - very reliable but it can go bad and when it does it can be expensive. There is a way to bypass it ( https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/06-07-air-induction-pump-failure-bypass.814912/ ) but its not CARB complaint (obviously). I’ve been thinking about doing it for the GX, but I can’t bring myself to do it.
Past that you are looking at the usual suspects of UV damaged plastics and splitting leather seats and the like. Sounds like this was mostly a highway car, which certainly helps.

The steering rack may need to be replaced. On 100 series, it appears they crap out between 150-200k miles. Make sure the heater T’s have been replaced as well. They tend to go dramatically and will leave you stranded.

Sspecially look at front sway bar bracket at frame connection. AC condensate drips here for some really aggressive frame rot. Bracket can conceal it. Transmission will fail soon. They all do at or before 3ook

Ask him if the heater T's have ever been replaced? Otherwise that's something you can do yourself and it's fairly inexpensive. it's worth noting that I believe the 2006 has the vvt-i engine in it which has some additional components on the emissions side relative to the 2005 model. Otherwise if it's priced appropriately you'll be very happy with the Land Cruiser, do you have a link or any pictures you can share?

Adding on that, if the teas have not been replaced I recommend you do it immediately. Don't wait do it now.

Now, that I’m at a computer here’s a list of everything I’ve replaced on my ‘05 LC with 210k miles
90k Timi
ng Belt and water pump services (including front main seal, cam seals, and pulleys)
sway bar bushings and one sway bar end link
1 Lower Ball joint
1 CV boot
2 Heater Hose Tees
Fuel filter (for good measure)
List excludes normal consumables list oil, brake pads, etc
The truck has been ridiculously reliable and hasn’t had any issues. Even all the trim and everything in the interior is still looking good. Although I usually condition my leather once or twice a year.

I heard about the heater Ts and will be replacing them ASAP, they look to be in good shape any may have actually been replaced, but I’m going to replace them with metal ones.
